How to Remove Furniture Marks and Dents from your Carpets

The Ice Cube Trick

When you rearrange the furniture in a carpeted room in your home, you may find out that the furniture has left a dent in your carpet.

Another scenario: you're having guests over one evening for a party, and you will be temporarily moving a coffee table out of your living room to make room for your guests — and that's when you notice the dents in your carpet left from the table's legs.

Here's How to Use The Ice Cube Trick to Remove Furniture Dents in Your Carpet:

Gather some ice cubes from your freezer, some kind of absorbent rag or sponge, and a dull scraping tool like a big coin or a butter knife.

Ice Cubes From Your Freezer

Place several of the ice cubes on top of the furniture dents in the carpet. Then, let the ice cubes slowly melt for a few hours.

As the carpet fibers soak up the water from the melted ice, they will begin to swell and rise — starting the process of releasing the dents.

(Note: This trick works better on some types of carpets — such as those made of nylon — than on carpets made from natural fibers like wool.)

After a couple hours, use clean, white rags or a sponge to blot (Don't scrub!) the melted ice cube dampness out of the carpet. If it's still slightly damp after blotting, that's ok.

After blotting most of the water out of the carpet, then softly groom the dented carpet fibers with the dull blade. Do this to bring the fibers back to an upright position.

And that's all it takes!

Carpet Twist Fibers like wool

If the carpeting is old, or made of natural fibers like wool, and the pieces of furniture haven't been moved in a long time (like over 10 years), then removing furniture dents will be a greater challenge. At this point, unfortunately, the indentations may be permanent because the fibers themselves are damaged.

If carpet fibers are damaged, then carpet repair or replacement could be your only option.

If you have any questions about this article, or if the dents in your carpeting are particularly bad, or if there are stains or rust involved, a professional cleaning may be necessary to take care of the problem.
